Another example is if you want to resize and export: this is two steps in PSP, but only one in AP. Things like the text and arrows tools are far superior, too. Layers seem more like an intrinsic feature, rather than the add-on they've always felt like in PSP. In particular, the Inpainting tool is superior to anything in PSP. I think Affinity is better in those areas.

However, the big plus point of Corel PSP for me is its usability. I don't think either PSP or AP has much to offer in this area.
Just compare it to Capture 1 for example. And you don't even have to pay for the dot releases (which include much more than the annual PSP releases). PSP has seemed essentially frozen for years AP seems very much alive, making real progress in each release. Obviously, the same plug-ins work just as well in AP. In 12 months’ time I’ll probably go through the same process of reappraisal. I’ve not installed it yet, though I’ll probably bypass the pile of ancillary junk that came in the Ultra package. So instead of going to Affinity or Capture 1 I chickened out last Friday and upgraded from PSP 2018 to 2020 for £30. I use Lightroom for RAW conversion, clone in PSP, manage layers in PSP and finetune my images with Topaz plugins/Studio. Corel’s focus is on trivia and they do not cater for, or appear to understand, the need for more advanced techniques. I’m sure that PSP can do more than I can achieve, but without explanatory tuition videos one has no chance of utilising its potential. Just look at what Affinity produces in comparison. One of the major grouses I have against Corel is that their tuition videos and Webinars are catastrophically poor or even non-existent for some applications. I abandoned their mediocre masking 6 or 7 years ago by adopting the Topaz Remask plugin, which was probably the best around at the time and is difficult to beat even today. They have improved the interface, but improvements to the editing package appear to be focused on selection/masking. The reason for a possible change is, as others have said above, that Corel have done virtually nothing to improve the package over the 15 years I have been using it.

Over the past few weeks I have looked extensively at other image editing software with the wish to change away from Corel PSP. If you are tempted then the current Humble Bundle that includes it (has just under 2 days left to run) is significantly better value My most useedpost apps are (not in order): I have tried them all and I use them all for special purposes, but only PSP compares with Photoshop for all around capability. Most of the naysayers are invested in other programs.

I picked up the 2018 version for a $20 upgrade price, My prior version was 2008. However if Corel pays me for the significant amount of retraining work involved, I shall gladly take on the chore otherwise, PaintShopPro 2020 gets a No Sale sign.I find Affinity more powerful but PSP much easier to use and more intuitive. The last things this group wants is a new learning curve. Now clearly Corel is targeting PaintShopPro 2020 to upgraders. In general all the photo editing tools are getting more complicated with substantial retraining and learning curves. So now I still do not know a)how to manage the PSPRO 2020 interface or b)whether the support for photo plugins has been restored to former glory. So readers can imagine the enthusiasm when encountering the new PaintShopPro 2020 layout: Uggh where is everything? Now this is not good news – a whole new workspace layout and no idea or hint for how to change to the familiar PaintShopPro 2018/2019 interface. Rightnow the best replacement to date has been Autodesk’s Pixlx online PhotoEditor. As many ThePhotoFinishes will know, this editor has been looking for a replacement for AdobePhotoshop as Adobe has failed to honor its contract with Photoshop and CS2, Cs3, CS4 And CS5 users.
